Neon lights glow through the science of excited atoms. When electricity passes through a sealed tube of neon gas, electrons jump to higher energy levels. As they return, they release energy as vibrant light, creating dazzling displays in cities worldwide.

Audio for Meeting 2

The main points of this meeting can be found included in the above audio link, but here is a summary of these points for quick reference:

  • The group agreed that the theme for the Magazine programme would be “Scotland”, with the targeted Radio Station being Radio Scotland.

The reason for this collective decision for Radio Scotland was that we all felt we could produce material associated with Scotland, and it would obviously meet their target audience. The target audience for Radio Scotland:

I feel that not only does this now lead to a variety of potential topics associated with Scotland that could be produced for Radio Scotland, but it also allows each of the group to look at a certain aspect of Scottish life that would embrace the theme for the show – a theme that we had still to discuss further and choose. This would also allow diversity and compliance that facilitates BBC Radio Scotland meeting its Public Purposes obligation as outline in the Charter:

“seek to maintain its coverage of regional, national and international themes and stories within its news, current affairs and factual programming, to enable audiences to develop a broad understanding of what is happening locally, nationally and in the wider world.” (OFCOM – The BBC Services: audiences in Scotland 2017)

BBC Radio Scotland is an ideal station to recognise as the broadcasting platform for the radio documentaries to be produced over the coming weeks and months by the group, which will ultimately form the basis for the one hour Radio Magazine Show.

With the main theme for the radio magazine show now agreed (Aspects of Scotland), as well as what radio station it should be broadcast on (Radio Scotland), further discussion was required to subdivide the main theme into various subjects that will encompass the main theme and promote what we are trying to convey in a magazine programme – A radio program that presents a variety of topics, usually on current events, in a format that often includes interviews and commentary. After a period of discussion in which all participated we all agreed on the following Scottish subjects for possible inclusion:

  1. Comedy
  2. Music
  3. History
  4. Sports
  5. Politics
  6. Tourism

I felt that this has presented us with a slight anomaly as these subjects are still quite broad and could result in a magazine programme that will “jump about too much” in its content, rendering the listener confused as to what point the programme is actually trying to convey – having no specificity about its content. Further discussion was required to formulate a more specific direction of the the programme to challenge – to be more concise in subject matter in what message it is trying to promote. This was also part of the discussion of yesterdays meeting, when the theme of Scotland was initially suggested, and the group had agreed to come to todays meeting with ideas on how that theme could be broken down further looking at a specific angle for the magazine show to address pertaining to Scotland and Scottish Culture. The following were suggested by the group today:

  • “A Day In The Life Of A Scotland”
  • “How Has Scotland Influenced The World?”
  • “What Has Changed In Scotland?”
  • “What Makes Scotland Great?”

After a period of further discussion the group decided to choose my suggestion of “What Makes Scotland Great?”.

All that was required now was for each member of the group to decide what aspect of this angle, and show content, they wished to make their documentary about. Following this period of discussion it was collectively agreed that the show ( “What Makes Scotland Great?”), will include:

  • Scottish Politics – Francesca
  • Scottish Comedy – Naomi
  • Scottish Sport – Cameron
  • Scottish Tourism – Mitch
  • Ann contribution is still to be confirmed.

This would now allow each member to progress in making their own documentary with a clear understanding of what was required to compile the magazine programme. The group meeting finished with the following action plan for the next meeting due to take place on Monday 4th March 2019 at 12.30pm –

  • WhatsApp group to be started to assist with communication between all group members.
  • Naomi to share the recorded audio with all group members before next weeks meeting.
  • Ann to decide which aspect of the theme she would like to pursue and include in the magazine programme.
