Monday 11th March 2019 @ 1230pm
Attending this meeting: Mitch Stevenson, Ann Brown, Cameron Conner, Francesca Sanna and Naomi Wilson( missed most of the meeting as was late).
Naomi was not present at the start of this meeting and only appeared for the final 10-15 minutes.
The meeting commenced with a recap of last weeks meeting as well as an initial review of the action plan for this week. The main purpose of this meeting was to offer and discuss our 2/3 ideas to pitch for the documentary – allowing positive discussion regarding suitability in corellation to both the Radio Station chosen (Radio Scotland) and theme for the one hour magazine show (What makes Scotland great?).
The following was discussed:
First up was Franscesca – her first idea was to look at doing a documentary on Feminism in Scotland. This idea was praised by the group but also challenged for its suitablility for the magazine programme as I felt it did not fit the brief in that it was not specific enough about “What makes Scotland great?”. Francesca offered her rationale for its inclusion but did later accept that maybe her second option was more suitable – The provision by the Scottish Government to offer free sanitary products to educational establishments for female students. This was also recognised by the rest of the group as being a more popular choice. It was agreed that Francesca will have another think about what options is best for both her and the show and feedback to the group next week.
Next up Ann – she confirmed she has chosen music last week. Her first pitch focussed on trying to establish new Scottish acts/events – something that Scotland has a history of producing well, although she expressed some difficulty in “where to start”? As an alternative to this Ann mentioned that she is also keen to do a “history of Scottish music”. No decision was made as it is known that Conor will also be speaking to all students about what they decide upon as their final choice.
At this point of he meeting Conor was available and we invited him into the meeting for his opinion on several matters relating to our planned documentary topic choices. There was some initial confusion as to whether we had to pitch all of our ideas, or just the one we choose. he also commented that there may be a chance that another better idea might originate from one of your current ideas.
Up next was my pitch to the group about my porposed documentary. My first idea is regarding suggested the “Outlander Effect” regarding Scotland tourism – that is, how Scottish tourism has been boosted by the recent filming for both film and TV production companies who have focussed on Scotland. The best of Scotland has been showcased in these various programmes and films, and this woulkd certainly fit the brief for both my documentary and the group magazine show.
My second pitch was to focus more on Edinburgh, looking at how tourism in Edinburgh is boosted by its attractions that make Scotland great! Edinburgh has a great deal to offer to promote Scotland as a destination for tourists, but this documentary would deveiate slightly from the briefe in that it was a more localised topic rather than being a national topic in realtion to Scotland as a whole.
My third idea was to look at producing a documentary about the role of a bus driver who takes tourist passengers throughout Scotland to the best places that Scotland has to offer, showcasing the apositive attributes that Scotland will offer. The premise of the documentary was to look at what makes Scotland so appealing from the perspective of someone who’s job it is to convey tourists to these locations whilst also giving some history and personal knowledge to the tourists – “Selling Scotland by the Pound” (Blatant Genesis pun!)
The group consensus was that my first idea was not only the best, but also probably the most suitbale in the context of the magazine show. I have more enthusiasm now about this documentary after getting this feedback from the other group members.
Next up to offer their documentary ideas was Cameron – he kicked off (pun intended!) with an idea about looking at the development of disability sport in Scotland, and how Scotland is one of the leading countries in promoting Disability Sport. First point of ontact would be looking at interviewing current Scotland level sport athletes. Although not a “solid idea” at the moment Cameron is still keen to pursue this idea. Ann commented that different and more suitable ideas may come out of some of these contacts, etc. Mitch offered that Cameron could look at sports funding, provision of venues, etc, as part of the story arc of his documentary. Cameron stated that having your Blog address on you at all times would help record any further/future ideas you may have.
Naomi joined the group just after Conor arrived, and went on the offer her only current idea which she had thought about this morning. She is very keen to look at doing something about the Edinburgh Fringe Festival regarding comedy – starting with collecting vox pops from tourists in Edinburgh at this time. The group were suggesting that this topic, albeit relevant, but may be the wrong time to do this topic. Ann suggested that Naomi perhaps looks at formulating an idea of (as similar to my idea as to how the Festival Fringe Comedy enhancing the visitor experience to Edinburgh – the benefits). Naomi found it difficult to accept the opinions of the group, and the group offered Naomi support on how to look at her moving forward with her idea, and Franscesca stated that all the group had their ideas challenged today. Naomi commented that she was keen to continue with her idea, and the group offered their support – Naomi stated that she will still do what she wants to do, and with it being her only idea at present she is keen to do the vox pops.
Actio points from todats meeting:
- Each group member will finalise their topic for their documentary – Conor will be having a discussion with each member of the group (and extended class) – and feed their decision back at the next meeting.
- Ann stated that she might have a different idea – this is born out of the philosophy that better ideas can sometime flourish from initial ideas.
- Group will after next week – commence their documentaries.
- It was agreed that cheese scones (and sultana fruit scones!) would be part of next weeks meeting – Mitch to bring!
- Cameron to update on Google Drive option
- Naomi asked what time we are meeting next week – Group agreed to continue to meet at 1230pm as previously.
